Development Done With Sustainable Water Use the Hope for a Prosperous Future

SIWI_AllardPPCquickHitsSTOCKHOLM — Water has always been a precious resource, necessary for life and huge factor when it comes to human recreation, but in recent years this fact is more and more on the minds of everyone. With increasing pressure on the world’s water resources in the face of climate change and a growing human population, it’s important for businesses and the marketers who promote them to keep sustainable water use in mind.

While all aspects of water use and conservation were on tap during Water Week, sustainable water use in development was center stage. Water Week is hosted annually by the Stockholm International Water Institute, a Stockholm-based policy institute founded in 1991 that generates knowledge and informs decision-making towards water wise policy.

During the week, experts, practitioners, decision-makers, business innovators and young professionals from a range of sectors and countries come to Stockholm to network, exchange ideas, foster new thinking and develop solutions to the most pressing water-related challenges of today.

While the focus was on sustainable development, the winning idea for water conservation to come out of the weeklong conference is veganism. It’s no secret that a pound of beef uses more water than a pound of grains, seeds or vegetables, but the numbers are staggering; it takes more than 5,000 gallons of water to produce on pound of beef.

Veganism may not be for everyone, but everyone can take steps to reduce their meat consumption, maybe having “meatless Mondays” or opting for meatless meals a few times a week.
